The routine

The six-month routine.

Two visits a year, each with a cleaning and an exam, is the single most effective thing you can do for your teeth. It is also the cheapest. Nearly every insurance plan covers it in full, and the problems it catches, a small cavity or early gum inflammation, cost a fraction of what they cost a year later. Patients who keep the routine rarely need the big treatments on this site.
Fluoride

Fluoride treatments.

Fluoride strengthens enamel and can reverse the earliest stage of a cavity before it becomes a hole.We apply a fluoride varnish at cleanings for children and for adults who get cavities easily, have dry mouth, wear braces, or have exposed roots. It takes a minute and you can eat soon after. At home, a fluoride toothpaste twice a day does the daily work.
Night guards

Grinding and night guards.

Many people grind or clench at night without knowing it. Worn, flattened or chipped teeth and morning jaw soreness are the clues.A custom night guard is a thin, comfortable appliance that takes the force so your teeth do not. It also protects crowns, veneers and implants. We make them from an impression and adjust them to fit.
Gum health

Preventing gum disease.

Gum disease is quiet until it is advanced. Bleeding when you brush is the earliest sign, and it is reversible at that stage.Daily flossing, cleanings on schedule, and yearly gum measurements keep it from progressing. If pockets have formed, a deep cleaning and more frequent maintenance visits bring the gums back under control.
At home

What to do at home.

Brush two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Floss once a day. Limit sugary and acidic drinks to mealtimes, and drink water the rest of the time.Replace your toothbrush every three months. If you use an electric brush, let it do the work with light pressure. And if something changes, a new sensitivity, a bleeding spot, a rough edge, call us rather than waiting for your next visit.

Questions patients ask

Prevention questions

Is an electric toothbrush better? For most people, yes, because it keeps brushing time and pressure consistent. A manual brush used well for two full minutes works too.Do I really need to floss?Yes. Brushing cleans three of the five surfaces of a tooth. Flossing cleans the two between the teeth, where most adult cavities and gum disease begin. What about mouthwash?A fluoride rinse helps patients who get cavities easily. Mouthwash does not replace brushing or flossing and does not remove plaque on its own.
