A checkup is the dentist looking at every tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth, with X-rays when they are due.We check for cavities, cracked or worn teeth, failing fillings, gum pockets, loose teeth, signs of grinding, and anything unusual on the cheeks, tongue and throat. If you have crowns, bridges or implants, we check their edges. You get a straight explanation of what we found and a plan with costs, in order of what matters most.Checkups are usually paired with a cleaning in the same visit.
X-rays
Digital X-rays.
X-rays show what the eye cannot: decay between teeth, infection at the root tip, bone loss, and teeth still under the gum.We use digital sensors, which need a fraction of the radiation of film and show the image on the screen immediately so we can walk you through it. Bitewing X-rays are typically taken once a year and a full set or panoramic image every few years, adjusted to your history and risk.

Every exam includes a quick look at the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate and throat for sores, patches or lumps.Most findings are harmless, but early detection is what makes oral cancer treatable. If something needs a second look, we tell you plainly and refer you promptly.

A new-patient visit runs a little longer than a routine checkup so we can get a complete picture.We review your health history and medications, take the X-rays we need, do the full exam, and in most cases complete a cleaning the same day. You leave knowing exactly where your mouth stands and what, if anything, needs attention. Bring your insurance card and any records from a previous dentist if you have them.We see patients of every age, and we speak English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.

How often should I see the dentist?Every six months for most people. Patients with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions may be asked to come every three or four months.Are X-rays safe?Digital dental X-rays use very little radiation, less than a day of natural background exposure. We take only the images your situation calls for and use a lead apron.Does insurance cover checkups?Nearly every dental plan covers two exams and cleanings a year at 100 percent, and routine X-rays as well. We verify your benefits before the visit.
