Bonding adds tooth-colored resin to a tooth and shapes it. It is the quickest fix in cosmetic dentistry. It repairs chipped corners, closes small gaps between front teeth, lengthens worn or short teeth, covers a dark spot, and reshapes a tooth that is slightly out of line. It is also used to cover exposed roots that are sensitive.
The visit
One visit, usually no numbing.
The surface is lightly conditioned, the resin is applied in layers and sculpted, then hardened with a light and polished to match the tooth beside it.A single tooth takes 30 to 60 minutes. Because little or no enamel is removed, numbing is rarely needed, and you can eat normally the same day.
Bonding typically lasts five to ten years. Resin can stain and chip more easily than porcelain, so it needs a little care.Avoid biting nails, pens and ice with bonded teeth, and limit staining drinks. Bonding is polished at cleanings and can be repaired or redone easily if it chips.

Questions patients ask
Bonding questions
Does bonding hurt?Rarely. Little or no enamel is removed, so most bonding is done without any numbing. What does bonding cost?Bonding is priced per tooth and is one of the least expensive cosmetic treatments. Insurance sometimes covers bonding when it repairs a broken tooth. We quote the cost before we begin. Can bonding be whitened? No. Whiten first if you plan to, then bond to match the new shade.
