If fear has kept you away from the dentist for years, sedation is the way back.It also suits patients with a strong gag reflex, very sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb, trouble sitting still, or a long treatment plan they would rather finish in one or two visits instead of six. Children who cannot cope with treatment awake can be discussed with the dentist.
Options
Sedation options.
PENDING: confirm which sedation types the practice offers. The options below are typical for a general practice.Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask. It takes effect in minutes, keeps you relaxed but awake, and wears off within minutes once the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home. Oral sedation is a pill taken before the visit that makes you drowsy and relaxed; you will remember little and need a ride home.Local anesthetic is always used as well, so the tooth itself is numb.
How it feels
What it feels like.
With nitrous, patients describe a warm, floating calm; sounds seem farther away and time passes quickly. With oral sedation, most patients doze through the visit and remember little afterward. You are never unconscious; you can respond to the dentist, and your breathing and vital signs are monitored throughout.
Safety
Safety and preparation.
Before any sedation we review your health history and medications. Some conditions call for a different approach, and we will say so.For oral sedation: no food for several hours before as instructed, a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you, and the rest of the day off. For nitrous, eat a light meal and come as you are.

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over a century and clears within minutes. You are monitored the whole time.Does insurance cover sedation?Nitrous is sometimes covered for children and rarely for adults; oral sedation is usually an out-of-pocket fee. We tell you the cost before you decide.
